Kauffman Trust

Dr. Ira R. Kauffman was a physician in State Center from 1901-1932. In 1991, State Center inherited $975,646 from his estate. His will suggested establishment of a city park. As State Center already had a park, and because there was a clause in the will with an alternative, the city fathers and interested citizens met to begin discussion of what could be done with this gift. The Kauffman Trust was established in 1997. Under this Trust, any State Center non-profit entity can apply for the annual grants. Monies from the Trust cannot be used for any of the City of State Center projects that are the normal responsibility of city government and the tax payers. The income cannot be used to fund the day-to-day operating expenses of the City or for capital improvements for the City.

For a more indepth history, please see the Kauffman Trust page.

State Center Municipal Electricity

State Center Municipal Electricity is a city owned electric utility that serves the electric customers in State Center and approximately 45 miles of the surrounding rural area.

The power plant and electric utility was established in 1899. The utility is under the direction of the State Ceneter city council, with four employees to carry out the daily operations.

Until 1975, all electricity was generated at the local power plant. In 1975, the power plant was interconnected with the regional transmission grid and we began purchasing power from other generation facilities.  Presently, we purchase power from the Ameron Company. The generation system is still maintained and operated as a standby facility with the ability to serve our customers at times of high demand and in emergency situation when the transmission system may be interrupted.

Business hours at the power plant are 7:30 am – 4 pm
Billing information may be obtained at City Hall, between the hours of 8-5.
