DARE Program

State Center Police Department and the Marshall County Sheriff's Office are in a partnership with the West Marshall Community School District. SCPD and Marshall County S.O. co-teach the DARE curriculum to sixth grade students at the West Marshall Middle School.

D.A.R.E. is taught by uniformed police officers for one hour a week over a ten-week period. According to the philosophy of the program, the officer adds both credibility and experience to drug prevention education. The officers now instructing the program in the school district classrooms have received intensive training in the D.A.R.E. curriculum, classroom management and childhood development.

D.A.R.E. focuses on these major areas:
  1. Providing accurate information about alcohol and drugs
  2. Teaching students decision making skills
  3. Showing students how to resist peer pressure
  4. Giving students ideas for alternatives to drug use
  5.  Instructing students to identify nonviolent ways to deal with anger and disagreements

Goals of the D.A.R.E. program:
  1. A reduction in the supply of controlled substances as a result of reduced demand
  2. Improved decision making in all life situations
  3. More positive identification with police officers
  4. An overall reduction in criminal behavior
